NEW REGISTRATION FEES FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES BEGIN SEPT. 1
The Washington County Tax Assessor-Collector’s Office is reminding residents who own electric vehicles about a new state law effective in September that will charge additional fees for vehicle registration.

Senate Bill 505, passed by the Texas Legislature during the 88th regular session, adds a $200 annual fee for electric vehicle registration renewals and a $400 fee at the time of new electric vehicle purchases for the initial two-year registration period.
The new fees will be collected on electric vehicle registrations processed on or after September 1st, in addition to the standard vehicle registration fees and any tax due for the vehicle. Texans may renew their vehicle registration up to 90 days prior to expiration.
The fees apply to fully electric cars and trucks with a gross weight of 10,000 pounds or less. They do not apply to hybrid vehicles.
Revenue collected from the fees will go into the state highway fund to help pay for roadway construction and maintenance projects.
Vehicle registrations can be renewed online via the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles website or the Texas by Texas website or mobile app. They can also be handled through the county tax assessor-collector’s office in person or by mail.
