The program offers residents a first-hand look at how their local government operates and how decisions are made.  Over the course of eight weeks, they can take part in interactive “real world” classes that acquaint them with the inner workings of city government.

Navasota Citizens University began as a means of helping the public understand city operations in areas like taxes, spending and finance, police and fire, and community zoning policies.

Classes are held once a week for two hours and are taught by representatives from city departments. Students will learn about setting budgets, tour city facilities, go behind the scenes with police officers, run tests on wastewater, meet animals from the shelter and experience the challenges faced by firefighters.  They will also meet with department directors to learn how those departments serve citizens.

Registration for the program is free to the public.  The classes will begin on May 7th and run through June 27th, taking place from 6 to 8 p.m. each week at Navasota City Hall.  Students will be recognized and presented with graduation diplomas during the city council’s meeting on July 8th.

Applications are available in person at Navasota City Hall and online at www.navasotatx.gov.  They must be submitted by April 16th
