Two Brenham firefighters were recognized today (Thursday) for saving a family’s dog during a house fire.

At today’s (Thursday) Brenham City Council meeting, Interim Brenham Fire Chief Rhea Cooper presented certificates honoring volunteers Stephen Draehn and Jason Lange for their work at the house fire on April 3rd at the corner of West Lubbock Street and Westwind Drive.  While searching the home’s second floor, they located and rescued the dog, Bailey, and reunited him with the family.

The fire fully involved the garage and spread into the house.  All family members were able to escape without injuries.

Cooper walked through the actions that day of local firefighters, of which approximately 25 across several local fire departments responded.  He also noted that a very similar fire happened three days later at a house in Georgia.  He stated an 11-year-old girl ran back in to try to get her dog out, but did not make it.

Cooper said the efforts of Brenham and Washington County first responders made a difference for the affected family as it recovers.

Following the recognition, Mayor Atwood Kenjura spoke briefly about last week’s incident at the Brenham DPS Office.  He applauded local first responders for doing an “unbelievable job” in responding quickly and urgently, saying, “There’s no question that our community is a very special one.”  He said a recognition event will be held for them soon.
