BURTON SCHOOL BOARD WELCOMES CURRY FOR FIRST MEETING AS SUPT., HEARS BOND UPDATE
The Burton School Board held its first meeting with new Superintendent Vikki Curry at the helm on Tuesday.
Dozens of community members came to a reception at the Burton ISD Cafeteria, prior to the beginning of the board’s meeting, to welcome Curry to her new role and to Burton.
The first order of business at the meeting was a bond project update from new construction manager-agent Weaver & Jacobs Constructors, who is replacing DSA, Inc. Weaver & Jacobs Project Manager Randy Boone presented a slide of aerial photos to the audience, showing the construction site and pointing out where crews are focusing their efforts.
Boone said work is moving along, but cautioned that some items may appear “out of sequence” as the firm works on truly getting the project back on track. He said it may not always look like it makes sense, but “at this point, progress is progress.”

After the bond update, board members recognized members of the Burton Beta Club for their accomplishments at Beta Club Nationals last month in Savannah, Georgia. Charli Majewski earned first place in poetry, Ian Spahn finished fifth in art, and Ellie Archibeque placed tenth in language arts.
Trustees later moved into discussion on the amount of local leave days the district provides to staff members. Currently, employees receive two local days of leave, but trustees expressed their desire to bring that number up to five, as most neighboring districts provide five local days. Burton’s local days also do not accumulate right now, but board members said they were open to considering a method of letting employees accumulate their days. The matter was only for discussion, so no action was taken.
The board also agreed to spend no more than $57,000 to outfit school buses with cameras. Six cameras with sound will be installed on each of the district’s 14 buses. Curry said the intent is to complete the installation as quickly as possible, ideally before the start of school.
In other business, the board:
- Approved the student code of conduct and teacher appraisal calendar.
- Approved an annual agreement designating Washington County Extension Agents as adjunct staff members.
- Approved a bank signatory resolution replacing former Superintendent Rob Barnwell with new Superintendent Vikki Curry.
- Agreed to delegate contractual authority to obligate the school district to the superintendent under Texas Education Code for the purchase of attendance credits for the 2024-25 school year.
- Reviewed the Texas Association of School Boards’ investment policy. Burton ISD Business Manager Caitlyn Blakey-Staal said the review is required each year, but there are no changes to the policy.
