The Young Men’s Service League (YMSL) has officially launched a Brenham chapter, bringing the nationally recognized mother–son service organization to the area.

The Young Men’s Service League (YMSL) is a nonprofit founded in 2001 in Plano, Texas, that empowers high school boys and their mothers to serve their communities together. The program emphasizes leadership, responsibility, and hands-on volunteerism, while also strengthening the bond between mother and son.

“Our purpose is to instill in these young men the value of serving others while giving moms and sons intentional time together,” said Beth Masser, President of the Brenham chapter.

“This is such a meaningful way for our boys to step outside of themselves, experience new perspectives, and understand how fortunate they are,” said Suzanne Flasowski, VP Communications. “We want service to become part of their foundation for life.”

The chapter launched in May 2025 with the Class of 2028 and Class of 2029, recruiting around 20 young men per class. Like all YMSL chapters, members are required to complete at least 20 hours of service annually, with half of those hours served alongside their mothers. The Brenham Chapter has already partnered with several local and national nonprofits.

“It’s been a great experience spending quality time with my mom while helping others,” said Miles Rankin, member of the Class of 2028. “I’ve learned that even small acts of service can make a big difference in someone’s day. It feels good to know we’re doing this together.”

In addition to service, the program includes leadership development and life skills training for the young men, ranging from Clifton Strengths assessments to practical workshops such as financial literacy, interview preparation, and community leadership. Each member holds a leadership role within the chapter, while moms also serve in positions to guide and support the program.

“Our goal is to raise young men who lead with both heart and action,” Masser added. “By serving together now, we hope they will carry this spirit of service into adulthood.”
