The Blinn College athletic department presented biology instructor Karen Killion with the second annual Buccaneer Backer of the Year award at the Buccaneer Backer golf tournament held Friday, Sept. 25, at Bellville Golf & Recreation Club.

Blinn athletic director Scott Schumacher honored Killion with the award before the start of the golf tournament.

“Karen Killion is the epitome of a Buccaneer athletic fan,” athletic director Scott Schumacher said. “She supports our student athletes both on and off the field of play and I could not be happier that she has been presented this award.”

Killion is currently in her 10th year at Blinn and is a frequent presence at Blinn football, volleyball, basketball, baseball and softball games.

“I think at this level we have an opportunity to impact the kids at a personal level,” she said. “I feel like if I support them at their athletic events then they will give it more effort in the classroom.”

The Buccaneer Backer Club was formed to raise financial support and awareness for all the athletic programs at Blinn College. A modest contribution of $100 helps the Buccaneer Backers provide aid in funding postseason travel, equipment and facility upgrades. Last season, the Buccaneers won the volleyball, cheer and dance national championships and the softball team placed fifth at the NJCAA National Championships.

  1. You could not have picked anybody better!! I can’t tell you how many times this past year I have seen Facebook posts from Karen about being at some event or another supporting Blinn athletics. Great choice.
