WASHINGTON CO. COMMISSIONERS ENTER INTO INTERLOCAL AGREEMENT FOR SALEM ROAD IMPROVEMENTS

Washington County Commissioners have entered into an interlocal agreement with the City of Brenham for improvements to Salem Road outside of city limits.

County Engineer Ross McCall explains the details of a cost-shared road improvement project on Salem Road at Tuesday's meeting of Washington County Commissioners.

Commissioners at their meeting this (Tuesday) morning agreed to pay $43,522 in engineering, construction and railroad permit costs for additional road improvements at the railroad crossing at Salem Road.  The city will manage and construct the project, while the county will reimburse the city for all costs associated with the design and construction.

County Engineer Ross McCall said it is costly for only one entity to handle some of the expenses associated with the project, namely getting BNSF Railroad flaggers out to the site through the duration of the project.  He said an opportunity came along to share costs with the city as it improves its own section of Salem Road.

These improvements span approximately 150 feet on the road, west of its intersection with the railroad tracks.

McCall said this will be a “long-term solution,” and thanked City of Brenham Public Works Director Dane Rau and Assistant City Manager of Public Services and Utilities Donald Reese for their assistance with the project.

County Judge John Durrenberger said these improvements are “something that surely needed to be done,” while Commissioner Candice Bullock said this agreement will provide cost savings for both the county and the city.

Also at today’s meeting, commissioners:

  • Approved a contract for an attorney to represent indigent defendants in Washington County court.
  • Approved the 2021 renewal contract for participation in the Washington County rotation log for towing services for abandoned, impounded, junked and disabled vehicles.
  • Added Woodland Ranch Lane, .473 miles located in Woodland Farms of Chappell Hill, Section Three, intersecting with South Meyersville Road in Precinct Two.
