BLINN STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION EARNS TOP HONORS
Students from Blinn College’s Brenham, Bryan, Schulenburg and Sealy student government associations were elected to regional leadership positions and earned top awards at the Texas Junior College Student Government Association (TJCSGA) Region IV convention recently held on the Blinn-Brenham campus.
The Bryan campus Student Government Association (SGA) was named Region IV chapter of the year for its outstanding involvement in other local college activities, community service projects and Region IV initiatives. Kye Cockerham of the Brenham campus SGA earned student of the year for his extracurricular involvement, academic achievement and contributions to SGA. Garrett Smith, Bryan campus SGA advisor, was named the region’s advisor of the year for his role in local and regional SGA groups, the TJCSGA and community activities.
Blinn now qualifies for the opportunity to earn the same designations at the state conference in April.
Michael Brandin of the Brenham campus SGA was elected region president, Jacob Sanchez of the Bryan campus SGA was elected vice president and Brent Reddell of the Schulenburg campus SGA was nominated treasurer. The Sealy campus SGA was selected to hold the secretary position and will vote on a student representative later this month.
“I am incredibly proud of these students,” said Erikah Brown, student clubs and activities coordinator. “They’ve worked hard to unite Region IV and their efforts have garnered the attention of their peers. It’s been a great year of growth and I’m excited to see them further their leadership skills at the state conference.”
Brandin, a first year student from Woodville, was inspired to serve on the SGA after several positive experiences in high school student council.
“I enjoy communicating with students, faculty and administration to resolve issues,” he said. “As region conference planning committee chair, I implemented workshops to increase unity across the colleges in Region IV. With unity, we can build a stronger Blinn and a stronger Region IV. I am delighted to have the opportunity to serve as the region’s president.”
Texas Junior College Student Government Association Region IV consists of Blinn’s campuses in Brenham, Bryan, Sealy and Schulenburg, Austin Community College, Hill College’s Johnson and Hillsboro campuses and Wharton County Junior College’s Wharton, Richmond and Sugar Land campuses.
Blinn’s SGAs serve as the official voice of the student body. Each year, the SGAs host blood drives, sponsor charitable events, assist with distinguished lectures and more.
