KOLKHORST ‘PROUD’ OF EDUCATION FUNDING BILL

Local State Senator Lois W. Kolkhorst is touting this week’s passage of increased education funding.

State Senator Lois W. Kolkhorst

This past week, the Texas Senate passed House Bill 3, which raises the state's share of education funding by $9 billion.

According to Kolkhorst the bill also eliminates two STAAR tests and breaks up remaining STAAR tests into, what she says are, “shorter less stressful segments.”  She adds that the bill also, “delivers an ongoing state-funded $5,000 pay raise for classroom teachers and librarians, and also provides billions in property tax relief.”

Kolkhorst goes on to say, the state’s “teachers, students and taxpayers deserve unwavering support,” and that she’s “proud that the Texas Senate passed House Bill 3 by a margin of 26-2.”

House Bill 3 now moves to a conference committee between the Senate and House to work out differences between the two versions.

The Brenham school district has come out against provisions of the bill, which Superintendent Walter Jackson says includes four new writing tests in grades 3-8 and a new assessment for kindergarteners.

Jackson says parents, educators, and the general public have made it clear that students are already tested too much.

  1. I’m glad there is funding for education and the teachers and support staff. This is great news!!! But how about the city raising the price of your home/property. They don’t have to get the approval of the homeowners and Citizens of the city. They only have to raise the value of your home way beyond what it is actually worth. Then they get all of the extra tax dollars they were wanting and will spend them the way THEY want to. My tax bill went up almost $1000 this year. This is ridiculous. Maybe it is a good idea to move deep into the country. Much much much less taxes.

  2. Glad to hear they’re eliminating some of the STAAR testing. My third grader is stressing out about the STAAR tests this week. There’s absolutely no reason a third grader should be stressing about school yet. There is so much emphasis placed on this stupid test that one of my kids came home talking about it on the very first day of school.

  3. Win,Win,Win, 3 point shot. Senator Kolkhorst!!! Finally something to help out teachers, kids, and the folks with property. What’s next?
