WASHINGTON CO. REPORTS COVID-19 CASES IN COUNTY HAVE DECREASED SINCE BEGINNING OF STATE REOPENING EFFORTS

Although COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations have increased statewide after the start of Governor Greg Abbott’s reopening plans, Washington County officials say the county has trended in the opposite direction.

The Washington County Joint Information Center (JIC) reports the county hit a peak of 117 active COVID-19 cases on May 12th, and started decreasing not long after Abbott began the initial phase of the state’s reopening strategy.

Since May 12th, the JIC has noted that new cases each day have decreased, daily recoveries have increased, and as of late Wednesday, there were 46 active cases, the county’s lowest case count since mid-April.  The JIC says these statistics represent, at least for Washington County, “a drastic improvement since May 1st even with the reopening of businesses”.

Washington County Judge John Durrenberger thanks the community for its “diligence in helping slow the spread of this virus”, and encourages the public to “continue to remain vigilant by following CDC recommendations such as good hygiene and social distancing”.

Wednesday, the county reported one new case in a Brenham woman in her 30s, bringing the county’s positive case count to 223.  Of the 46 active cases, five patients are currently hospitalized.  The county has also reported 149 patient recoveries and 28 deaths.

The Brenham Nursing and Rehabilitation Center (BNRC) has only one active case remaining out of its 111 positive cases, consisting of 87 residents and 24 employees.  The facility has reported 86 patient recoveries and 24 deaths.  The remaining case is not hospitalized.

As of Wednesday, the county has performed an estimated 3,480 COVID-19 tests, with 223 coming from the BNRC.

  1. Just noticed since Labor Day there have been no cases in people over 70. We have been fortunate that the trend is down but we should not get complacent. The number of cases can quickly trend upward just like it has in other parts of Texas. I see fewer and fewer folks wearing masks and practicing social distancing. Be smart and put up with the minor inconvenience for the sake of your fellow man.
