PROPERTY VALUES CERTIFIED IN WASHINGTON COUNTY

Washington County Chief Appraiser Dyann White reports that she has certified the property values for the county.  This year, 1515 protests were filed against the assessed tax value, and settlements were reached in 1035 of those protests.  White said “Some taxpayers hesitate to file protests, or assume their concerns will not be addressed. We made adjustments of value to well over half of the protests we received.”

Property values increased throughout the County.  The most significant increases were in land values, especially in the Burton area.  Overall taxable value increased about 10-11% throughout the County; however, the City of Burton taxable value increased just over 25%.

  1. Is there a public report showing the taxpayers how the monies are being proportioned in the county? Also an detailed explanation why the taxes are being used where?

  2. Property taxes are out of control and it’s making hard for those that work here. The average taxpayer will soon not be able to afford to pay their taxes.

  3. For all those persons out there who read these stories and get upset at the tax rate, it might be to your dismay that there is a propertynear Brenham where the owner owes over $37,000 in back taxes on a home and parcel that is valued at $311,000. This individual, who was a lawyer here in Brenham four or five or more years ago, has not made a payment in almost 4 years. Does anyone really think that this is fair or equitable? I would have thought a tax sale would have been carried out several years back; if he’s a lawyer, he ought to be able to pay the taxes on the property each year. If not, sell it.
As well, there are scores of properties that I have looked at and they receive an ag exemption, but there are no signs of cattle, there are no fences, the land is overgrown in volunteer trees and such, and there is absolutely no way that hay or any other crop could be made. “These are reassessed every 5 years” I was told. To think that someone may get a break of $2,000 or $3,000 (or more) each year for 5 years turns my stomach and makes me think that the appraisal district has more going on than they are willing to admit. An astute high school graduate could be given the addresses of these properties and a digital camera and told to drive by, get out look over the property and see if you can find any signs of ag use and take photographs either for proof or disproof. Report back and let the preceedings (if necessary) begin.

  4. Quickly getting taxed out of the county! Continuing to make it a struggle for those working locally. Please over tax those that don’t have their primary residence here!
