WASHINGTON CO. APPRAISAL DISTRICT BOARD REVISES REAPPRAISAL PLAN

The Washington County Appraisal District Board of Directors met on Tuesday to revise the district's reappraisal plan.

Chief Appraiser Dyann White explained that the revisions are necessary because the appraisal district’s recent software conversion has led to the need to clean up its building permit data in the new database before inspections begin.  Originally, onsite inspections would have begun in November, but they are now expected to be delayed by a month.

White said reviewing the data prior to going onsite will ensure that the appraisal district can use the new software’s building permit functionality to its fullest potential.

Also on Tuesday, the board held a public hearing as required by the state to discuss the Texas Comptroller’s Office’s findings regarding the appraisal district’s appraised values for Brenham ISD.  For 2021 and 2022, the appraisal district received a score of “invalid” in the Property Value Study because the school district’s values were considered too low; the appraisal district’s appeal to the state was denied earlier this year.

If values are found to be “invalid” again for 2023, Brenham ISD could lose state funding and the appraisal district office would undergo a Targeted Map Review, described by White as a “very intensive audit” conducted by the Comptroller’s Office.

White said, based on the sales data the appraisal district has, she believes appraisals for 2023 will be valid.  The 2023 Property Value Study results will be released by January 31, 2024.

  1. Another example of why this tax is so unfair. Austin tells Washington County what to do. The tax goes up every year and my income doesn’t. I have avoided raising the monthly charge for rent on my rentals because I know my renters are not making more money. This has made my return on investment almost zero. I will have to make an adjustment this year. Tax, Tax, Tax and spend with unbalanced budgets. What a mess.
