7th GRADE STUDENTS TAKE PART IN LOCAL HISTORY DAY

Hundreds of 7th grade students are in Downtown Brenham today (Friday) taking part in the Fourth Annual Local History Day.  Groups of students are touring several historical locations and learning about Brenham’s past from volunteer reenactors dressed in period outfits.  Groups of 7th grade boys toured the Brenham Heritage Museum where they learned about the civil war and the Texas Rangers.  Girls toured the Ross Carroll Bennett House where they learned about proper etiquette in the 1800s.  The students will also tour the historic Simon Theatre where they will view “The Dawn of Washington County” film.History Day outlaws small

The student’s day culminated with a gunfight reenactment.  The gunfight is scheduled for 1:45 at South Baylor and Commerce Streets.

Organizers have seen steady growth of the program over the past four years.  This year over 700 students and teachers are taking part and 150 volunteers are working at the various locations.  The purpose of Local History Day is to teach students about local history in a memorable way, and the importance of the community to Texas history.
