The man suspected of gunning down a Harris County Sheriff’s deputy has been found incompetent to stand trial.

Tuesday morning, Shannon Miles was declared incompetent to stand trial on murder charges.

Miles is the accused killer of Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy Darren Goforth, who was shot 15 times from behind as he was pumping gas into his vehicle last August.

Miles was evaluated in December.  The defense’s expert found Miles is schizophrenic, with psychotic episodes.

Miles’ attorney says it had been impossible for him to communicate with his client on a rational basis or in a rational manner.

Miles will now be transferred to a state hospital.

At the state mental facility, Miles will be treated then reevaluated in 120 days.

  1. State Hospitals are no walk in the park. He is not getting off Scott free. The types of people in these facilities are your every day criminals, they are insane!

  2. I think we can all agree on one thing here….under no circumstance is it acceptable to randomly take another human life. That being said-punishment for those who do it and their mind is “insane” , should be dealt with in an entirely different basis than those who kill someone just to seek revenge or get away with another crime themselves, etc….

You see, I never believed mental illness should be treated seriously until I married a woman whose young son had severe mental issues. I told her most of his behavior could be solved with a good kick in the rear…..boy was I wrong. People who are actually sick in the head need resources and they need them now as opposed to later. Who is responsible for deciding whether this is truly the case or if the person is “faking” to get by with something? Our legal system……judges, attorneys, sometimes juries……and that’s the law of our land folks, whether you like it or not. If you don’t, take action to have changes made. Bother the daylights out of your elected officials til they actually listen. (boy what a nice change that would be, eh?)

Yes it is a horrific thing that this man was gunned down in seemingly random cold blood and I’m not saying the accused should ride off free. What I am saying is that he should be treated in a different manner than should punks who rob a convenience store and kill someone, thugs who kill someone in a drug deal, car jacking, etc…… Just imagine for a few minutes if the accused was your own brother, father, grandfather, son or close personal friend- I’ll bet most folks would want to make sure they would be treated fairly but justly. Make the punishment fit the crime and the person, in other words.

  3. What a devastating thing for his family and friends to hear. What a shame that an innocent person lost his life. In my opinion he was not incompetent to drive home after he murdered this man !!!! He is probably no more insane than I am AND I am as sane as can be. I hope he gets what he deserves in the facility he is placed in. I hope he cannot sleep at night listening to all the jabbering and screaming with the others he is locked up with.

  4. …and this is why access to affordable and adequate MENTAL HEALTH CARE needs to be taken seriously in our society!

  5. Incompetent? Really, ok so he is crazy! So they say he didn’t know what he was doing? And he gets off scott free…and the family of the officer, they go on living their lives. Don’t understand that at all!

    1. Incompetent means he’s crazy right now, not crazy at the time he did it. He’ll stay in the mental hospital until they can make him not crazy long enough to go to trial. If that never happens, he’ll stay there for most of the rest of his life, kinda like the guy who shot Reagan to impress Jody Foster.

    2. Incompetent to stand trial looks at the guy’s mental state at this moment. Insanity looks at the guy’s mental state at the time of the offense. Big difference. This just says he’s too “crazy” right now to go to trial. They’ll send him to a mental hospital where they will restore his mental state to competent to stand trial, then take him to trial. If they are unable to restore his mental state, they’ll likely go through proceedings to have him locked in a mental hospital for life. He doesn’t “get off scott free.”
