BLINN CHEERLEADERS QUALIFY FOR NATIONAL COMPETITION

Four Blinn College cheerleaders recently qualified to compete in the partner stunt competition at the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) College Cheerleading National Championship Jan. 12 at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla.

Sophomore Marina Guerrero, and freshmen Ashlyn Beard, Alyssa Gabrillo, and Madison Looney will represent Blinn in the female group stunt competition. This marks the second time in the program history that a stunt group has qualified for nationals. In 2016, the Blinn stunt team placed third in the nation as the highest ranked junior college in the competition.

“They have made a big sacrifice and commitment to accomplish something like this,” said Michael Brewster, Blinn cheer coach.

Blinn was the only junior college to qualify out of the 12 teams selected.

“Since we are the only junior college that qualified, we want to make a name for ourselves,” Looney said.

Following the partner stunt competition, Guerrero, Beard, Gabrillo, and Looney will try out for the United States national cheerleading team on Jan. 15.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 36 NJCAA national championships since 1987. For more information, visit www.buccaneersports.com.
