BRENHAM CITY COUNCIL APPROVES ZONING CHANGES

Through great opposition, the Brenham City Council approved changing a section of land from a recreational/open space district to a multifamily district in order to build an apartment complex located on the north side of Old Mill Creek Road. The council also approved a permit to allow a multifamily development on this tract of land. Residents within 200 feet on this tract of land were notified of this zoning change request. The residents then gathered a petition and received greater than 20% opposition to the change, requiring a super majority for this zoning change to pass.

Many residents were present at the council meeting Thursday to present their opposition. Lori Walker, a woman living in the Old Mill Creek subdivision showed concern about the zoning changes causing a decrease in property value, increase in traffic, and flood control. Despite the residents’ concerns, the request passed 6-1 with Councilmember Andrew Ebel being the lone “no” vote on both of these requests.

City Council approved changing the district from a recreational/open space to a commercial/retail district on 2.1 acres of land located at the Northwest corner of the Intersection of Old Mill Creek Road and S. Saeger Street. Developers, Terry Ward and Marc Millis want to build an apartment complex on this space as well as have retail space for business.

A plot of land being bound by Rucker Street, North Park Street, West Blue Bell Road, and Ewing Street was approved – 6-1 with councilmember Weldom C. Williams Jr. being the one “vote” – to change from single family residential use to commercial/retail use. The same tract of land was approved for a zoning change from single family residential use to local business/residential mixed use.

Council also approved the zoning district from single family residential to local business/residential where Kolkhorst investments plans to place a Burger King at the southeast intersection of Ewing and Rucker Streets.

  1. We should remember this vote at the next election time. Not sure of the representation in this case.

    1. Councilman Goss should have abstained, He is a property owner on Blue Bell Road, within blocks of the Zoning Change. This is a self-serving decision for Goss to vote in favor for the Zoning Change. The small town ethics in city of Brenham politics to be self-right and credible is DEAD, NOTTA, GONE, A THING OF THE PAST.
