The event, put on by the Bureau of Land Management, features adult and yearling horses and burros that once roamed free on public lands in the west.

The adoption event will take place at the Grimes County Expo Center from noon until 6 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday. The animals are offered on a first-come, first-served basis for the minimum adoption fee of $125.

The Bureau’s staff will approve applications on site. To qualify to adopt, an individual must be at least 18-years-old and have no record of animal abuse. Adopters must have a minimum of 400 square feet of corral space per animal, with free access to food, water, and shelter.
