OUTDOOR MERCHANDISE PERMIT APPROVED FOR GARDEN STORE

  

A business planning to locate at the entrance to Scenic Estates will be allowed to display merchandise outside of their building.  Brenham City Council approved the first reading of a special use permit to allow Blue Goose Garden and Gifts to sell and display plants, yard art and other merchandise outside their store.  Some concerns from residents of the neighborhood were expressed during the planning and zoning hearing and city staff suggested a 1 year time limit be placed on the special use permit.  Business owner Krissie Zorn and property owner John Hueske objected to the time limit at the public hearing stating that they were making a sizable investment and that a one year limit did not make business sense.  Council agreed and removed the one year limit from the special use permit but did attach a provision that no portable buildings could be stored or sold on the property.

In other action, the council tabled a noise variance for the Relay for Life event.  The event was scheduled for October 22nd at Jackson Street Park.  It was originally planned for Fireman’s Park, but that location was already booked.  The Relay for Life event lasts until midnight, and council member were concerned how the noise would affect the neighborhoods around Jackson Street Park. The item was tabled until the next meeting to see if a better location could be found.

This fall, Brenham will likely see a flurry of green sprit flags at various locations.  Brenham City Council approved an agreement with the Brenham school district to place green spirit flag along the entrances to the campuses and at Brenham Cub sporting events.  The Flags are green with Brenham in black lettering.  They will be set up to signify various events and will not be permanent.   The agreement with the city was necessary because some of the planned locations fall within the city right of way.
