STORM DAMAGE ASSESSMENT UPDATE

  

Almost three weeks has passed since the historic flood event in Brenham and Washington County. The damage assessments are still being made, emergency repairs are underway and the total financial impact is still being calculated.

A report has been submitted to the State DPS office of Emergency Management by Chief Boeker indicating an initial calculation of roughly $1.5 million in damages to city facilities and infrastructure. That number is likely to go up as assessments are complete.

While the initial paperwork has been filed, FEMA has not yet set up a specific date to perform an assessment of public damage for the City or County. By next week, FEMA should have a field office set up in Brenham to work damage claims. It is expected to be set up at the Washington County Fairgrounds.

FEMA has not set up a date to inspect damages to the City and County attributed to the May flooding; however, they are in Brenham meeting with city personnel to look at the Burleson Street culvert washout form April.

Public safety management personnel met recently to debrief the disaster response and evaluate the positive things about the response and where improvements can be made. They plan to have an expanded meeting next Wednesday at 6:00pm at Firemen’s Training Center.
