ELECTION DAY VOTER ID

Today is Election Day and the biggest issue for many are the requirements  to cast a ballot.

Nine proposed amendments to the state constitution are on the ballot.  The highest profile amendment is proposition six, which calls for the creation of a $2 billion fund to make loans on water projects in the state.  The fund would be administered by the Texas Water Development Board.  The fund would come from the state’s emergency or Rainy Day fund.  Other topics range from criminal justice to reverse mortgage to local election laws. There are other proposals about tax exemptions for the widows of veterans.

The only local issue is for residents of Oak Hill Acres Fresh Water District.   They have a bond issue amounting to $500,000 to pay for repair and replacement of water and waste water faciltiies and for the refunding of any outstanding bonds.

The biggest issue however, is the implementation of the voter ID law.  This is the first statewide election in which registered voters need to show certain forms of identification to cast a ballot.  Washington County Clerk Beth Rothermel says most voters have a driver’s license but they can show other forms of identification

Rothermel says no one will be turned away from the polls. If the name on your voter registration card is substantially similar to your photo identification you will need to sign an affidavit changing your voter registration.  Rothermel says provisional ballots will be issued only as a last resort.

Fifteen polling sites are open in Washington County from seven am to seven pm today. (Tuesday).  You can see where you need to vote on the kwhi.com website.
