LOCAL HIGHWAYS SAFE

Reports from the two area offices of the Texas Department of Public Safety, in Pierce and Bryan report no traffic deaths during the New Year’s holiday period.  There were reports of ‘plenty of activity but no deaths’ at the Bryan office.

A 65-year old Grimes County man was killed New Year’s Eve morning, near Carlos.

The highways were not as safe in the surrounding counties.  Police in Houston report that at least six people died late Tuesday or early Wednesday in either homicides or traffic fatalities.

The DPS is still compiling the total figures from 2013.  The last full year of statistics are from 2012.  In that year, there were 2809 alcohol related traffic crashes that killed 178 people in the Houston area.  The same year, 82 people were killed in Dallas County and 62 people in killed in Bexar County.

The year 2013 was a relatively safe one for the highways in Washington County with three traffic deaths recorded during the year.
