POWER OUTAGES CAUSING PROBLEMS FOR BURTON WATER SUPPLY

The continued rolling power outages caused by the freezing weather are leading to problems for Burton’s water supply.

According to Burton Mayor David Zajicek, the rolling blackouts have caused the communication between the city’s water well and the water tower to stop working.  This is because, according to Zajicek, the well does not have enough time in between outages to fill back up.

Zajicek said the city is working to find solutions to the problem.  He stated when speaking with KWHI that Carmine and Giddings are experiencing similar issues.

When asked what residents can do in light of these issues, Zajicek said many were able to stock up on water ahead of the winter storm.

  1. I don’t understand how they decide who gets rolling outages and who doesnt? I’ve spoken to several people on bluebonnet and city of Brenham power that don’t have any outages at all. Yet my power is on for 13 mins and off for 18 like clock work. Shouldn’t this be spread out across all users rather than focused on certain groups? Having power on for 2 hours and off for 20 mins would be much more tolerable.

  2. These rolling power outages are not only lasting 15 minutes, but hours. Whoever made the decision to do that is putting people’s lives at risk. Also, for years residents have been charged fees that were explained as to cover costs in upgrading and updating equipment for better reliability and service. Where is that reliability that everyone has been forced to pay for in this time of need? Common sense says that if you work in that industry and are around it daily then there should be 2, 3, 4+ different backup plans in place….idk…a storage system to store power in excess times for the lean times? Back up generators? Surely those in the field have solved this issue decades ago…..reach out to conpanies up north…something is better than purposely shutting off power on people and risking their lives….

  3. Hopefully the Mayor has relayed issue directly to Bluebonnet, as I would imagine he has. These quick-cycling rolling outages of 15 mins on/off do not allow time for heating systems. But water is an even more critical issue. If we have lost pressure we may need to go to boil water notice? I know City staff and officials are doing all they can and thank them sincerely for their diligence and dedication when their own comfort is as compromised as any of us!!

  4. Yes. This is a problem for anyone who has an uncovered, uninsulated water supply, that relies on a pump to keep a full level. One of my Properties is now out of water because my well is insulated, but not covered with a well house.
Power goes out, water stops moving, line freezes. It might be a real good idea for the City of Burton to invest in an emergency generator for the peoples water supply. Money well spent, because power can go out for non freezing weather as well.
