BURTON ISD EARNS ‘A’ FINANCIAL ACCOUNTABILITY RATING

Burton ISD has received a glowing rating from the state for fiscal accountability.

On Monday, the school board held a public hearing on the district’s School Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST), which is meant to encourage public school districts to better manage their financial resources.

Burton ISD received an “A” rating for “Superior Achievement”, scoring 98 points out of a possible 100.

The 2022-23 ratings are based on an analysis of the school district’s financial data from the 2021-22 school year.  Ratings are based on indicators such as the accuracy of financial data submitted to the Texas Education Agency (TEA), the transparency of data posted on the district’s website, administrative cost expenditures and any vulnerabilities or weaknesses in internal controls as determined by an external, independent auditor.

Trustee Dean Fuchs called the rating “a profound achievement” for Burton ISD.

Also on Monday, trustees received a bond update from officials with DSA Construction Management.  According to their report, utilities and storm drainage has been installed throughout the field for communication and the grandstands, and Boothe Construction is installing the next section of storm drainage that crosses along the back side of the track and the maintenance shop.  Hellas Construction has made site preparations for asphalt and has finished prepping the field for the final base layer.

Job Superintendent Rob Ogletree said everything is moving along smoothly and that good progress is being made, adding that in a couple more weeks, it will “really look like a football field out there.”

During her report to the board, Burton ISD Superintendent Dr. Edna Kennedy said State Representative Kyle Kacal is scheduled to hold a meet and greet tomorrow (Wednesday) at 6 p.m. at Blue Willow Café and will also do a tour of the district.  With the new legislative special session underway, she encouraged local district leaders to attend and visit with Kacal about Burton ISD’s educational needs.

In other business, the board:

  • Heard an evaluation of the ESL program for the 2022-23 school year.
  • Voted on nominations for the Washington County Appraisal District Board of Directors.  The board opted to split Burton ISD’s 520 available votes between candidates Joseph Antkowiak and Leslie Boehnemann Jr.

  1. Follow the link and do a search. Brenham also scored a 98. The lowest scoring district anywhere around us was Navasota and it also received a “Superior Achievement” rating. Everybody gets a trophy according to the State of Texas and the legislators that mandated this wasteful exercise in pushing paper.

  2. Great JOB!!!!!!!!

Now can yall come to Brenham and show them how money should be spent?????

    1. Brenham is on par and lower in budgeted expenditure per enrolled student than surrounding districts. Burton actually much higher than Brenham. The tax rate for Brenham is also much lower… hence the deficit.
