BRENHAM CITY COUNCIL SUBMITS GRANT FOR BOLLARD TRAFFIC SYSTEM

The submission of a $50,000 grant request was authorized at today’s (Thursday) Brenham City Council meeting.

The city would use the grant, from Lower Colorado River Authority, to install bollard sleeves across downtown Brenham.  Public Works Director Dane Rau says the system will take care of all streets between Alamo and Main Street, and hopes to install bollards on Market and Austin Street in the future.

The bollard sleeves, made of schedule 80 pipe, will be cemented into the ground for easy reinsertion of temporary bollards, which are constructed of schedule 40 pipe.  The bollards will strictly be used for closing streets and guiding traffic during parades and special events.  The intent is to prevent accidental or intentional vehicle entry into high-volume pedestrian areas.

The city also named its new provider of bulk fuel and fleet fueling services.  Alexander Oil of Brenham will take on responsibilities, at a rate of 10 cents per gallon, down two cents from the last contract bid in 2015.  Alexander Oil was the only company to bid, although there were inquiries from other companies.

The city also renewed its Group Health Plan with TML, at a rate of seven percent.  This rate is an increase from the previous four percent for the Employee Benefits Pool, but according to presenter Carolyn Miller, the increase will not be passed on to employees.

The city also approved a memorandum with the Brazos Valley Council on Alcohol and Substance Abuse, to provide a prescription drop box to discard of unwanted medication.  The drop box will be located in the Brenham Fire Department’s lobby.

Other items included the approval of an audit for Seidel Schroeder, a memorandum with Blinn College for the use of Hohlt Park and Jackson Street Park, a review of the second quarter financial report, Henderson Park improvements (see related story), and two noise variances.
