CUBS DOWN MAGNOLIA–FACE TOMBALL MEMORIAL, SATURDAY

Brilliant pitching and three timely hits were enough to carry the Brenham Cubs to a 2-1 win over the Magnolia Bulldogs, Friday night in the District 20/5A finale.

The Cubs, trailing 1-0 in the fourth inning, when Eric Wellmann doubled, sending Jake Olson to third.  Olson then scored the tying run on a groundball out Colton Buro.  Wellmann scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.

Austin Derkowski and Evan Aschenbeck would make the one-run lead hold up.

Derkowski (5-2) went 6.1 innings, giving up just one run on three hits and striking out seven Magnolia batters.

Aschenbeck picked up his first save, striking out the final two batters.

Wellmann, Buro and John Dickschat would manage the only hits for Cubs batters, while Magnolia was limited to just three hits, as well.

Meanwhile, Tomball Memorial out-slugged Tomball, 11-8, creating a tie for third and fourth place in the district.

The Cubs and Wildcats will decide the tie Saturday afternoon at 1:00, back at Magnolia High School.

The winner will face Leander Rouse, the second-place team in District 19/5A in the Bi-District playoffs.  The loser will take on the top team in 19/5A, Georgetown.
