CUBS ROLL TO SEASON OPENING WIN, 48-7
The Benham Cubs scored every time they had the ball as they rolled over Elgin, 48-7 in the season opener, Friday night at Cubs Stadium.
The Cubs took advantage of a Wildcat turnover on their very first possession and cashed in on a Weldon Patterson 3-yard touchdown run.
The next time the Cubs had the ball, they faced a fourth and one from their own 32 yard line. The Cubs went for the first down and it payed off as Erik Preston burst through the line and sprinted 68 yards for the score.
Touchdown runs from Kendarin Ray and Tamarus McWilliams posted the Cubs to a 27-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, the Cubs’ offensive line took complete control of the game, as they grounded out first down, after first down as Ray and Patterson each scored again and Lonterrious McClain picked off a pass and returned it 30 yards for the score.
Coach Glen West says the Cubs were extremely focused going into the game, “They took this game really, really serious. We were scared to death because we hadn’t played in two weeks and we were really impressed with them (Elgin) last week.”
“We were so disciplined and selfless, and while we made a lot of mistakes, we’re really going to enjoy tonight.”
The Cubs outgained the Wildcats, 426-to-149 yards total offense.
Brenham rushed for 372 yards on 50 carries (7.4-yards per rush), led by McWilliams with 119 yards and a touchdown. Ray added 95 yards and two scores, while Patterson chipped in 46 yards and a pair of touchdowns.’
The Cubs will travel to Houston next Friday to face Episcopal High School. Kickoff is set for 7:00. The game can be heard beginning at 6:30 on KWHI and www.kwhi.com.
