EXPECTED COMPLETION DATE GIVEN FOR VIETNAM AIRCRAFT DISPLAY AT HENDERSON PARK

Brenham VFW now has an expected completion date for the restoration and display of an F-111 aircraft in Henderson Park.

At today’s (Thursday) meeting, Public Works Director Dane Rau told the Brenham City Council that the VFW plans to have the Vietnam-era aircraft on display by Veteran’s Day, Sunday, November 11.

Brenham VFW Post 7104 Commander Ben Seeker gave the history of the aircraft, saying it flew over 100 combat missions before being shot over Hanoi.  It sustained damage to the point where it was unable to be brought back to combat qualifications.

The plane’s cockpit will be closed and stripped, but Seeker expressed desire to reequip the cockpit for Memorial and Veteran’s Day, so tourists could take pictures.

The license agreed upon at today’s (Thursday) meeting states that the VFW would keep responsibility for the plane, because of its contract with the United States Air Force.  Henderson Park would simply house the aircraft, while the VFW would take care of any maintenance and upkeep.  There are currently no plans to have any fencing around the plane, but there will be lighting and a security camera monitoring the area.

For more information on the project, contact the Brenham VFW post at 979-830-8776, or Dane Rau at 979-337-7407.
