GRAND JURY CLEARS BRYAN OFFICER INVOLVED IN SHOOTING

A Bryan Police officer who shot and injured an unarmed man in February has been cleared of wrongdoing by a Brazos County grand jury.

27-year-old Steven Laughlin had been on routine administrative leave after shooting Calvin Baker, who reportedly made threatening remarks and gestures to Laughlin and another officer on February 12th.

District attorney Jarvis Parsons said the grand jury concluded its review of the evidence- which included body camera footage and eyewitness accounts- and decided not to take action.

Bryan Police Chief Eric Buske explained the incident at a press conference last month.

Buske said officers were dispatched to the 5300 block of Mallard Drive around 10:15 p.m. on February 12th.

Officers say a 33-year-old man made several threatening statements and acted as though he had a handgun. The man proceeded to pull out a black object from his back pocket and took a shooting stance- pointing the object at Laughlin. Officer Laughlin fired his gun several times.

The black object turned out to be a cell phone.

The incident was investigated by the DA's office, the Texas Rangers, and the Bryan Police Department.
