BRENHAM MIDDLE SCHOOL INTRODUCES STUDENT LEADERSHIP ACADEMY

  

Brenham Middle School is excited to announce a new Student Leadership Academy coming to the campus in January 2018. Counselor Julie Haferkamp is heading up the effort with help from Sgt. Kelvin Raven of the Brenham Police Department. The academy will use restorative practices to build character, develop leadership skills, foster a positive school climate, and help students build relationships with local law enforcement. Using restorative circles, the counselor will act as a facilitator while the officer participates with the students in discussing ethical behaviors and habits of successful individuals. This allows for officers and students to openly discuss the lesson values in a safe and respectful space.

Teachers at Brenham Middle School identified 16 students in 5th and 6th grade to participate in the pilot program. Groups will meet once per week and utilize curriculum developed by a similar effort in Klein ISD. Parents will also be involved in the process with an interactive debrief document at the end of each weekly session. Students will “graduate” from the program at the end of the year and receive a certificate of completion.
