UNITY THEATRE TO SHOW “BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS” STARTING JUNE 13TH

The final Main Stage production of the year will begin soon at Unity Theatre, with the performance of Neil Simon’s “Brighton Beach Memoirs”.

Part one of Simon’s autobiographical trilogy, the classic comedy shows a portrait of the writer as a young teen in 1937, who lives with his family in a lower middle-class Brooklyn walk-up.

Eugene Jerome, standing in for the author, is the narrator and central character. Dreaming of baseball and girls, Eugene must cope with the mundane existence of his family life in Brooklyn: a formidable mother, an overworked father, his worldly older brother Stanley, his widowed Aunt Blanche, and her two rapidly maturing daughters.

The comedy will be directed by George Brock, the Theatre Program Director at Episcopal High School in Houston. Brock has directed several shows at Unity, including Scapino!, Deathtrap, A Tuna Christmas and The Odd Couple.

Tyler Holmes will make his Unity Theatre debut in the role of Eugene, with his parents played by Jamie Ward and Wyntner Woody. Julie Fontenot—also debuting—portrays Aunt Blanche, and her maturing daughters Laurie and Nora, played by Hannah Price and debuting Alyssa Marek.  Eugene’s older brother, Stanley, is played by another Unity newcomer, Tommy Stuart.

Brighton Beach Memoirs plays on the Main Stage for three weeks at Unity Theatre, from June 13th to the 30th.  The show is rated PG-13.  A preview performance will be held on the 13th, which includes a talk-back with the cast and crew right after the performance.  The show on the 22nd will feature a chat with the director before the performance.  Show times are Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 4 p.m.

Tickets are $27 and they are reserved; however, $19 tickets are available for the Preview, student tickets are $15, and all unsold seats are $15 at 15 minutes prior to any performance.
