BRENHAM CITY COUNCIL, PLANNING AND ZONING TO DISCUSS SIDEWALK SIGN PROGRAM

The Brenham City Council will meet in work session with the Planning and Zoning Commission Thursday to continue talks on signage ordinance changes.

In addition to possible changes to the sign ordinance, city staff have been considering adopting a pilot program for sidewalk signs in downtown Brenham.

Staff are proposing having permanent sidewalk signs at key downtown intersections, which would advertise businesses with arrows to direct pedestrian traffic.

Pending adoption by the council at a later date, the temporary program would begin with seven signs in downtown.  Following community feedback, more signage could be introduced.  City staff say the program is intended to reduce the number of sidewalk signs to ensure safety, while still keeping the downtown look and guiding pedestrians.

Staff will also go over the general changes being made to the sign ordinance.  Assistant Development Services Director Stephanie Doland said no new feedback has come to staff after the release of the second draft of the proposed ordinance.

The meeting will be held Thursday morning at 11:30 a.m., at City Hall.
