WASHINGTON CO. PROPERTY OWNERS RECEIVING APPRAISAL NOTICES

Notices of appraised value have begun going out to property owners in Washington County, and values are on the rise.

Chief Appraiser Dyann White says property values are increasing on average between 10 and 13 percent, as there is high demand for property in Washington County.

White says there is about a two to three week lag in the timing of this year’s notices, primarily because of continued recovery from COVID-19, as well as her still being new to the Washington County Appraisal District after beginning in January.

White says with increasing values, it is important for those who are eligible to get their homestead exemptions.

The deadline for property owners to protest their appraised values is June 14th.  Any information submitted with a protest will be reviewed by appraisers.

Anyone with questions or concerns is encouraged to visit the appraisal district office at 1301 Niebuhr Street, or call 979-277-3740.  Resources for property owners are also available online at https://washingtoncad.org.

  1. They are making it impossible for lower and middle income families to live in Brenham. They are leaving landlords no alternative than to go up of peoples rent. Taxes are sky rocketing in this area and its going to make rent houses unaffordable for lower and middle income families. City officials want to complain about the Rental housing shortage in Brenham, but its not going to get any better when the taxing authorities in this community make it unprofitable for landlords to own single family houses because of the tax burden. Landlords will sell their rental homes to first time home buyers and then there will be less rental properties in this community. If that’s what Brenham wants, that’s what they are going to get with the current taxing burdens they are putting on people. Not everyone has the ability to buy a home, so affordable rental homes are a necessity in a community and when it is no longer profitable for landlords because of the outrageous property taxes to own single family houses there will be none for people to rent.

  2. I agree with Phill. DO NOT TURN BRENHAM INTO ANOTHER AUSTIN. Austin used to be a nice city. Austin sucks dirty pond water now.

  3. Here we go again, we are being punished for people driving up our housing prices. Which most of them are fleeing Democratic City’s like Austin, Houston. Why do the citizens of Washington County have to pay higher taxes? We are just coming out of a pandemic, now your raising taxes, by ten percent? We the people of Washington County need to rise up and say no more.

    1. They do but they won’t. Even though the tax base is increasing because of new construction and higher property values, which increases tax revenue without a tax rate hike, they’ll raise the tax rate anyway because no one will take up the fight. Did you really think people who live off the public dole care about your concerns?

    2. Your point is particularly good in light of the fact that new home construction and rising values of existing properties add to the tax base. Thus even if the tax rate stays the same, more tax revenue is generated because the housing pool — the number and values of residential properties to tax — has grown substantially.
