Alex Guzman, a junior, earned the honors after participating in the Area level competition held virtually from January 9-13.

The top students in each section from all 33 regions across the state of Texas advance to the area round, where the best players are selected as Texas All-State Musicians.  In a typical year, all of these students meet for four days in San Antonio where they audition for chairs, rehearse and perform a concert.  This year, there is no plan for that concert to take place.

Typically less than 2 percent of students that begin the audition process earn the All-State designation.

Other students that placed high at the Area competition were Carter Cohrs, a junior tenor saxophone player who finished as second chair; Tierson Williams, a senior clarinet player who finished as fourth chair after making All-State last year; Aaron Rodriguez, a junior flute player who earned sixth chair; and Kayln Shill, a senior trumpet player who finished as eighth chair.

In total, Brenham had 33 students that advanced to the Area round.

Band Director Eric Rettig congratulated the students on their hard work, saying he is proud of how much they have grown.  He said their work will allow the band to “play some challenging and fun music this spring.”
