FALLEN SOLDIERS HONORED IN RADIO-ONLY MEMORIAL DAY PROGRAM

This year’s Washington County Memorial Day program took a much different shape than in previous years, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a result of the restrictions put in place by the coronavirus, activities that would normally take place at Brenham’s American Legion Hall occurred only over the airwaves of KWHI.

Allen McClure, retired from the United States Marine Corps and current associate pastor for Champion Fellowship Church in Brenham, was the guest speaker for today’s (Monday) program.  McClure talked about the history of the United States and its origins, and gave an overview of the conflicts it fought in.

McClure said the sacrifice made by those fighting for the newly independent United States in the Revolutionary War in 1776 secured a future for the fledgling nation.

McClure said while people do not have to agree on the conflicts the United States has fought in, they should not forget the sacrifices made by those in the armed forces so that the nation’s citizens may be free.

Several local dignitaries also gave addresses thanking the men and women of the military for their sacrifices, including Washington County Judge John Durrenberger, Brenham Mayor Milton Tate, Burton Mayor David Zajicek, State Representative Ben Leman, and State Senator Lois Kolkhorst.

The Memorial Day program was organized by the Washington County Veterans Association.
