NUMBER OF BURGLARIES IN BRENHAM ON THE RISE

Brenham Police are reporting that the number of home burglaries and car break-ins are on the rise in Brenham.

According to Angela Hahn with the Brenham Police Department, the number of the burglaries is up from last year, with twelve vehicles and eleven businesses and homes broken into across Brenham.

Hahn says that there seems to be a spike in these crimes during the day in the summer months when the kids are out of school, and that there may be gangs involved in these crimes.

Police are asking residents to report any suspicious activity to the police department.

  1. Traffic enforcement is an important part of crime reduction. How do most people who commit burglaries get to the location to commit the crime they DRIVE A CAR! By enforcing traffic laws there is a good chance that a burglar will be stopped either coming to Brenham to commit the crime or leaving after committing the crime. Additionally there is a deterrent effect by having visible traffic units on Hwy 290 the bad guys might choose not to committ a crime. That worked last year when the bank robbers came to town saw police/sheriff patrol vehicles everywhere and left because in there words “Washington County and Brenham was to hot to TRY to commit a crime.”

  2. One of the headlines is going to be “Robber Killed by Homeowner ” if this doesn’t stop soon. So sad people think they have the right to break into others belongings for a quick buck. Sad sad sad!

  3. Follow the money. You get money with citations, you spend money prosecuting in an already stressed local judicial system. It’s a no brainer, issue citations. City is taking a financial hit right now with local lay offs, so they need to make up the deficit. So citizen beware, watch your property and belongings, and obey the traffic laws.

  4. I do not understand why more people do not start Neighborhood Watch Programs? This is a great way to meet your neighbors and to also meet the local law enforcement officers. The officers can only do so much, it is up to us as citizens to watch each others back and to report any suspicious activity that goes on. With technology today, why not put up camera’s in and around your home to help deter the criminals and to also catch them if they do break the law? Be proactive!
I also challenge each citizen to take the Citizens Police Academy class. So much is learned about their jobs and what they go through.
And to the officers I have this to say……get to know the people of your town-all of them! Befriend the kids, get to know the parents, be friendly but most of all be safe out there!

  5. Totally agree with CHResident.. People would understand if it was their house been burglared. In my case, its been 2 weeks and have not heard a thing about my case. Evendough we told them who did it. Still didnt do anything.

  6. I would like to see the citizens help out the police officers. We try to watch out for each other in our neighborhood. My parents raised me old school and that how I raised my kids and their friends had to go by my rules at our house! Maybe someone in the neighborhood need to get to know the neighborhood kids it would go a long way. Do you know your neighbors?

I’ve lived here for years and it seems like the spike in burglary and b&e has been steadily going up for the past year and a half. If this is a summer issue then you would be implying that it is teens and kids, since a majority of the college students leave over the summer. Have gangs taken over the high school in the past year or so?

We have more cops per citizens then most counties in the state, yet all we can do is give out traffic tickets and pick up a couple pot heads a week.

  8. I Hope the sheriffs office stops these gangs before they ruin our small town and our way of life!!!

  9. BPD does a great job overall. That being said, why do we still see so many officers on 290 writing tickets all the time? I’m sure these officers were given this assignment by someone in the command staff. Why not take the officers that are writing tickets all day and re-assign them to patrol neighborhoods…..get to know the kids, the adults, who belongs and who doesn’t? Seems to me like this would be a win-win for residents and businesses who would benefit from a stronger police presence. I do realize this would result in a decrease in revenue to the city, but I think most would agree that it would be worth the cost.

    1. I cant agree more with you. It would help make the kids feel safer about law enforcement and know who to trust when they need help. This town needs more positive and less negative.

      1. I agree with that to a degree. However…..law enforcement is here to protect and serve the community. How is tickets serving or protecting? I have never been stopped in any of the speed traps but I believe their time could be better spent. BPD command staff should consider re-focusing their efforts toward real crimes instead of catching those that speed through our community in my opinion. I am so sick of reading and hearing about (relatively) minor traffic violations and (relatively) minor pot violations when there are crimes being committed against our residents and business owners!! Let’s take a step back and focus our efforts on the truly undesireable elements that are infiltrating this town!!!!
