FEDERAL JUDGE TEMPORARILY BLOCKS GOV. ABBOTT’S IMMIGRATION TRANSPORT ORDER

A federal judge has blocked Governor Greg Abbott’s order directing state troopers to pull over vehicles that are transporting migrants.

Gov. Greg Abbott

On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Kathleen Cardone granted a temporary restraining order against Abbott’s directive, following a lawsuit brought forth by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) against Abbott and Texas on Friday.

Abbott’s order, issued last Wednesday, allows DPS troopers to stop vehicles carrying migrants and reroute them back to their origin point or seize them if the driver does not comply.  Abbott stated that the order is meant to reduce the spread of COVID-19, but immigrant rights advocates say it invites racial profiling.

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a letter to Abbott that his order is “dangerous and unlawful” and “violates federal law in numerous respects.”  The DOJ said in its lawsuit that the order would disrupt federal immigration operations.

The temporary restraining order will remain in effect until August 13th, but could be extended.
